Depends on the game really. Porn games don't really need background music but normal games do I'd say. For example in Hollow Knight it's nice that each area has a different music that adds to the general "feel" of the game. Spooky area? Let's use some spooky-ish music. And for various boss fights and phase transitions the music can be excellent, for example Ludwig, The Accursed & Holy Blade from Bloodborne.

It can be fine, as long as there's a slider/mute button, and it's not just a 5 second loop

Yes, but no. I find that I don't particularly care for games that don't have music. But, oddly, I also find that I rarely listen to that music. I often have videos or something playing in the background, and I'm listening to that instead.

The right music can greatly enhance the sense of immersion.
