I like sandboxes at first when there is lots to do. The interactivity is a plus in my books, provided that it isn't accompanied by unnecessary grind. But unfortunately, in most games, they wear out their welcome as content decreases.

i feel that in VN the immersion in the story is greater, idk, constantly navigating from point to point is awful

I think for me it's both. I do like VN's but sometimes in sandbox games time flie's a bit more.
If there is too much grind I don't like them, though.
A nice mix as in BADik with the VN- and the free-roaming parts is perfect in my opinion!

Since I personally put gameplay in the first place, then the sandbox is preferable. I'm not afraid of Grind. As for VN, they are noticeably weaker in terms of gameplay, In addition, it is very rare to come across VN with a well-developed plot and well-developed characters. 80%, if not more, are not superior in their level to ordinary fanfiction, which girls of school age are very fond of composing.

Yeah, agreeing with most of the sentiment here. Visual novel with agency is the best, grindfest sandbox the worst. Everything else in between.

Both
But the problem is that sandboxes are often poorely made - a ton of useless and boring movement around the locations, bad UI, annoying grinding mechanics like jobs (some devs make it even more retarded by adding sims like shit with hygiene, need to piss, hunger, sleeping; hello mister Happy Summer's dev)

VN. The problem with sandbox is many of them lack substance; devs get overambitious which results in a subpar quality all over. When your focus is all over the place, you get nothing but disappointment. This is especially true when you've multiple LI.
